4 Reasons Why Men Are Struggling to Get a Close Shave

There's nothing worse than finishing your shave and realizing you missed a few spots. Most of the time, it genuinely isn't you. It's the tools and the technique you're using.

Here are the four most common reasons you're not getting a close shave, and how to fix each one.

You're shaving with dull blades

Most razors in the shaving aisle are made of cheap plastic and have multiple blades. They look enticing with all the branding and marketing, but in practice they tend to fall short. Most of the time, you don't even realize the blades are dull until you start shaving and notice half the hairs aren't getting cut.

Multi-blade razors aren't built to last or stay sharp, which is why they sell add-on cartridges, usually around $3 apiece. Everyone likes shaving with a fresh blade, so it honestly surprises us that people are still buying them. Why pay $3 for an extra cartridge, let alone a whole new razor, when you can get a fresh blade for about 12 cents?

Your razor is clogged

Let's say your blades aren't dull and you just picked up a brand new multi-blade razor from the store. For men with curly or thicker hair, that razor clogs easily. That's because of the "lift and cut" method multi-blade razors use: the first blade pulls and tugs on the hair, and the blades behind it cut through it. Or at least try to.

After the hair is pulled and stretched out, it snaps back when it's cut, sometimes back into the skin, and that can lead to a lot of ingrown hairs. Plenty of people on our team were dealing with this, so they understood our mission right away: a razor with a single sharp blade that passes through cleanly every time and skips the lift and cut altogether. When you let the blade do the work, there's less pressing and pushing down on your skin, and less irritation.

You're pressing too hard

If you've ever finished a shave and noticed hairs you still wanted to get, trust us, we feel your pain. There's honestly nothing worse than looking back at a spot you just shaved and seeing hair still there.

This tends to happen with multi-blade razors, or razors with no weight to them, because you have to press down to get a result. Often the head is already clogged, the blades are too dull, or it simply isn't good at what it's meant to do. It's hard to get a clean pass with the lift and cut method, especially when leftover hair is clogging parts of the blade, so you don't get full coverage. Look for a razor that passes through cleanly and lets you just guide it where you want it to cut.

Your lather is too thin

Your lather is too thin

You can definitely go wrong with the razor you're using, whether it's plastic or multi-blade. But another issue a lot of people run into is a watery, runny lather. The worst shaves happen when the cream won't foam up and you have to use half the tube just to cover your face.

A good shave cream should do the exact opposite. An almond-sized amount should foam up and stick to your face, softening the base of each hair so the razor can do all the work. We recommend letting the cream sit on your face for 1 to 2 minutes before you start shaving, so it has time to soften the hair.
